#InOneSpace

(Campaign launched by Overlake Best Buddies)

"You're so beautiful...because you have a disability" "You're special, remember that."

While these may seem heartwarming, wholesome comments on the surface, they are in fact perpetuating infantilization and patronization. Speaking slowly, making assumptions, or even trying to do basic tasks for the person with IDD without their permission! These all form a derogatory environment where those with IDD are viewed as less than and less capable than others.

Heartbreakingly, experiences with patronizing comments, unsolicited help, and inappropriate questions about personal lives are frequently reported by people with IDD. As a result, some studies even report that one-third of the IDD community claim to have low self-esteem.

#InOneSpace fights to change that view and create a society where those with disabilities are included and viewed the same way as those without disabilities.

Join Overlake Best Buddies to continue that fight!

“Think Higher. Think College.” Campaign

Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities can go to college!  This campaign is designed to build awareness and expand access to college for students with IDD.  We want every person with IDD to be able to consider college as an option.

Currently, only 2% of school-age students with IDD attend college. The problem is that many are not aware that those with IDD have the desire AND the ability to attend college.

That's why we adovcate for inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE). IPSE means that students with IDD attend college alongside those without IDD and are given the same opportunities, including clubs, academic classes, and employment.

Research Poster

We made a poster that debunks myths about IDD and researched several types of IDD. Given the little to no IDD student body at our school, we recognized how crucial it is to educate our peers about what IDD is and the correct perception of it.

We ourselves also learned a lot from contributing to this poster! Most of us only had the passion but not much knowledge about IDD, but through this activity, we integrated ourselves into the community further!

Spread the Word Campaign

Stop the use of the R-word used to belittle and insult individuals with intellectual and developmental disability.
Being called the R-word inevitably leads to trauma and a deep scar that will last a lifetime. Encourage others to also stop its usage to be respectful to everyone.

April is Autism Awareness Month

Celebrate Autism Awareness Month with us through the spirit week! Incorporate the representative color, blue, as well as create a positive and comfortable environment for everyone.

Friendship Walk!

We raised $500 for the friendship walk, which was the 2nd highest in the state! We met many other chapters in the area (and of course, the cute animals at the zoo).
We were inspired by our state director, Emma Croston's speech and will push forwards towards an inclusive society! Go Best Buddies!
